Our recent losses have made us realize the need for a true
memorial to the commercial fishermen from our community who have been lost
at sea.
For several years now the Foundation has been in the discussion phases of
building a Point Judith Fishermen's Memorial. We have raised funds for the
construction phase and garnered much volunteer support.
Along with the Memorial construction, we also make use of our funds by
making donations to families who have lost a family member. We try to give
enough to help these families through their first difficult month. Often
it seems as if we cannot give enough.
After the Memorial stones are on site, we plan to keep an account running
perpetually for the maintenance of the stones and the site, as well as the
engraving of more names that qualify at no charge to the families affected
by these tragedies.
It is my hope that after the construction of the Memorial, we will be able
to continue raising funds for these purposes as well as getting more
involved in safety at sea issues to help prevent future accidents. Hard as
we may try, the Sea is still a hostile environment and accidents can and
will happen as long as men are trying to make a living plying our waters
near and far.
Members of the local commercial fishing industry have initiated and manage
this entire project on a volunteer basis.
